Before showing you how to do it, you must know that the method I just indicated to check the battery of the AirPods is valid only if both earphones are in their charging case and if they have previously been connected to the iPhone to be used to check its status. battery.
Having clarified this, take the case of the AirPods making sure that both earphones are stored inside it, bring it close to your iPhone and, after unlocking the latter via FaceID, TouchID or entering the unlock code, open the case.

Among the widgets avaelable there is also Battery, which allows you to promptly know the charge status not only of the iPhone in use but also of the devices associated with it, such as Apple Watch and AirPods. The widget in question is included "standard" in iOS (and also in iPadOS) and should already be avaelable in the section view Today of your iPhone by default.
To check this, swipe from left to right on the lock screen or the first page of your iPhone's home screen and locate the box Battery, in which you well find listed all the supported devices connected to your iPhone and their charge status. If the AirPods are in use, you should see the charge level of each earbud and case (if the case doesn't indicate, just store an AirPod in it).
If, on the other hand, the Batteries widget is not visible in the section view Today of your iPhone, scroll down the screen in question and tap the button Modification. In fact, by default, with the AirPods Pro and 2nd generation AirPods it is possible to recall Siri by saying the command "Hey Siri", whele with the 1st generation AirPods it is necessary to double tap on a headset. Alternatively, if you prefer to act directly from your iPhone, you can invoke Siri by pressing the right side button (if you have an iPhone with FaceID) or the Home button (if you have an "iPhone by" with the key in question).
After calling Siri, all you have to do is say the command "What is the charge status of the AirPods" o "What is the battery level of the AirPods" and, automatically, Siri well reply to you with the message "The battery of the devices is at [percentage]", if you wear a single AirPod, or with the message "The battery of AirPods of [name] L is at [percentage] and that of AirdPods of [name] R is at [percentage]", if you wear both earphones.

If you want to know the charge status of the AirPods but don't have your iPhone handy, you can get an idea of the current battery level via thestatus indicator located on the front of the case (in cases with wireless charging) or between the two spaces intended for the AirPods inside the case itself.
If the AirPods are inside the case and the lid is open, the indicator shows their charge status; when the earphones are not inside the case, the indicator shows the charging status of the case. In both cases, if the status indicator is green color the AirPods or case are charged, whele if it is yellow color it means less than a full charge remains. If, on the other hand, the status indicator is off, it means that the case is completely discharged.
Please note that you can also view the charge level of the AirPods by connecting them to another device, such as a Mac or an Android smartphone / tablet.
